What is a Payment Aggregator?

A payment aggregator, also known as a payment facilitator (payfac) or payment service provider (PSP), is a third-party entity that simplifies the process of accepting electronic payments for businesses, particularly for smaller merchants or individuals who may not have the resources or technical expertise to set up their own merchant accounts with financial institutions. Payment aggregators essentially act as intermediaries between merchants and payment processors, aggregating transactions from multiple sub-merchants and facilitating the acceptance of various payment methods.

Payment aggregator services includes:

  • Merchant Onboarding:
Payment aggregators streamline the onboarding process for merchants. Instead of each merchant having to establish an individual merchant account with a financial institution, the payment aggregator consolidates them under its own account.
  • Payment Processing:
Aggregators handle the processing of payment transactions on behalf of their sub-merchants. This involves accepting payments through different channels, such as credit cards, debit cards, digital wallets, and other electronic payment methods.
  • Risk Management:
Payment aggregators implement risk management and fraud prevention measures to protect both themselves and their sub-merchants. This can include the use of advanced security tools and monitoring systems.
  • Payouts and Settlement:
Aggregators manage the disbursement of funds to sub-merchants. They consolidate the funds from various transactions and distribute them to the respective sub-merchant accounts, typically on a scheduled basis.
  • Compliance and Regulatory Support:
Payment aggregators assist sub-merchants in navigating the complex landscape of payment regulations and compliance. They ensure that sub-merchants adhere to industry standards and legal requirements, helping to reduce the regulatory burden on individual businesses.
  • Reporting and Analytics:
Aggregators offer reporting and analytics tools to sub-merchants, providing insights into transaction data, sales performance, and other relevant metrics. This information helps merchants make informed business decisions.
  • API Integration:
Payment aggregators provide Application Programming Interface (API) integration, allowing sub-merchants to seamlessly integrate payment processing into their websites, mobile apps, or other platforms. This facilitates a smooth and customized payment experience for the end-users.
  • Customer Support:
Aggregators often offer customer support services to both sub-merchants and end-users. This includes handling inquiries, addressing issues related to transactions, and providing assistance with technical matters.
